Spartapuss…

November 4th, 2007 · No Comments

We are staying in a house with a menagerie of critters.  Sally is an openhearted animal lover who has the innate ability to be the cat whisperer.

About 3 weeks ago, the kids came in telling her about a kitten they found outside the house who was tiny, crying and looked lost.  Sal and I went outside to find the cat surrounded by some local boys who looked like they may be up to no good, with the tiniest kitten I have ever seen.

Sally immediatey went, picked up the kitten and brought her inside.  She was a desert cat.  Desert cats look like those Egyptian cats you see surrounding an old sarcophogus.  The are skinny and long with big heads and not very fluffy.  This cat also look a bit like a bat, with wings of skin under her legs and because she was so hungry, her skin was hanging off her.   The entire household was ready to adopt her.

Sally and Mike went out for the evening which left me to try and feed the baby.  I managed a syringe of milk, and some mushed up kibble.  Then I walked to the corner store and found some full fat cream.  Well kitty quite liked the idea of licking the cream from my finger, so for about 4 hours, I just fed her cream.  Meanwhile, the other two cats and three dogs were eyeing the interloper, wondering how this creature would change the balance of power.

We found a shoebox and a towel, and made a bed for kitty.  Like any newborn, she cried a bit before settling down.  Jacques insisted on having her in our room to protect her from the others, but I think he just liked the idea of playing with the kitten.

Two days later and this little kitten is recovering nicely.  She went from 300 grams to 500 in two days.  Integration into the household was cautious, but Sally has a talent the likes of which I have never seen.

Several weeks later and the cat has been christened Gucci.  She loves to play and it looks like she is top dog in the household.  One dog at least 5 times her size is petrified of her, and the rest tolerate her existence.  She has seriously sharp claws and thinks nothing of climbing your leg to get close to you.  Not a thrilling experience when you are in shorts!  She runs around the place and it is hysterical to see her go up to the bigger critters and just give them a swat.  Some of those bigger critters are people.  She likes to ride on your shoulder and really likes playing with long hair.  But, with that come the occasional bite of an earlobe.

She loves to nip and has a habit of finding the soft fleshy bits under your arms.  Out of nowhere as you are sitting peacefully on the couch, the vicious little tiger suddently nops under your arm, then takes the stalking position ready to pounce you again.

In my opinion she is not aptly named.  Last night we watched 300, the story of Leonides, King of the Spartans and his battle with Persia.  The Spartans motto is “Do not retreat, do not back down, attack”.  Spartans are trained for battle, trained to be fighters and expect to come back with their sheild or on it.

Gucci has gone from mewling little weakling to the craziest and bravest fighter I have ever seen.  Being the smallest, she has quite a Napolean complex.  This kitty is not an aloof fashion maven with the snobbery her name implies.  Based on this little kitty’s ability to attack, and her razor sharp claws and teeth, she should be named Spartapuss.
